Today is Heritage day, and I was thinking about the brands I have such positive memories in my mind. Some are still around (creme soda coldrink, though it doesn't taste quite the same) while others are not. The specific one I have been thinking about is Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney pies. I remember my late grandmother (Nana) serving them regularly. It would come in a tin and you would have to take the lid off before baking it in the oven. They were always so nice, with the creme soda coldrink!
Sigh.

Hi I don't know you but I do remember Fray Bentos pies. Growing up in England, I vividly recall my central European mum trying to assimilate local culture and bringing one of these tinned pies home. I loved it but she was horrified, considering it worse than dog food and could not understand why anyone would voluntarily eat such stuff, and for days (probably years, actually) afterwards went round muttering darkly about uncivilised English cooking. Her heritage was different to yours! I saw one in a supermarket here in Melbourne quite recently - seemed to be much smaller than i remember.

ReplyDeleteI also saw one in later years. It also seemed smaller than I remembered. Do you suppose it was the effect of inflation?
