Braaivleis, rubgy, sunny skies and Chevrolet

While we are on the Heritage track (and 24 September being Heritage day and Braai day), I was reminded of the wonderful jingle we grew up hearing - "braaivleis, rugby, sunny skies and Chevrolet" (repeated a few times of course). For those in consumer behaviour, I wasn't very old (really!) but still remember the lines that follow ("they go together, in the good old RSA"). The images (as in most advertising) showed very happy people driving a Chevrolet (of course)and all singing cheerfully.
It seems that not only did Fray Bentos pies and creme soda taste better, but the jingles were better!

  1. I think of the brands that are clearly etched in memory are those that appeared on the tin signs outside trading stores- Joko Tea and Coca Cola and sometimes even Pepsi.

  3. Oh wow - when i arrived in Australia 30 years ago teh ad i remember to this day was "football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars" - there was me thinking it was home-grown genius but since Holden is the local offshoot of GM I guess teh marketing departments worldwide were talking to each other even then. Standardisation vs localisation. My undergrad students love the 30-year-old ad when I show it to them, it's truly iconic of its time. (I trioed to learn an Australian accent from that ad, not very successfully!) here's the ad, is it anything like the one in SA?

  4. Colin, This ad is amazing. It has the same tune. So I guess local v/s global is the issue. I have forwarded this link to so many people. What did we do before youtube?

This the link to the SA radio ad version (we didn't have TV at the time). Of course I am horrified I remember an advert from 1974!

Essentially it is the SA equivalent of barbeque. And mostly we just "braai" - the act of cooking meat (vleis) on a fire. We will make one for you when you visit SA!

  9. OK! Looking forward to it.

Does everything end up charcoal black, like an Aussie BBQ? ;-)
