Technology on an Indian Ocean island

Just so you all know - I am doing an island visit to determine the effect of technology on the island of Mauritius. No, actually here for some examination business, but the next blog will focus on this. What is interesting is that at the Intercontinental Hotel (5 star hotel!), you have to pay for internet access in the rooms. Wifi only in the lobby. Makes you wonder whether they have read their market (or not)!! Do they want to attract 5 star guests? They do charge 5 star prices for their accommodation!! Anyway, the sun is shining and the weather is beautiful!!!

  1. I was in Europe for a conference earlier in the year and had a similar problem - they had promised free access to wifi but actually using it would cost me a fortune.

I objected vociferously and aksed if they would charge me to use the toilet as well. They looked appalled but took the point that internet access is as important as plumbing and air conditioning - and saved Monash 20 euros a night!

  2. I had exactly the same problem a few months ago in Sydney. Same story, same solution (a lot of noisy complaining at the reception desk in front of other guests), and the problem was quickly solved.

It looks like this is a standard operating procedure - part of "Tourism 101" training?

  3. You what is really sad (!) - I have used this experience to write a research proposal that we will be doing. The title - e-Readiness in Mauritian hotels (or something similar). Every experience is a research topic!! Let's see what happens at the retreat later this year!
